Celebrating World Book Day 2024 at UWC

Event Overview

On April 23rd, 2024, the University of the Western Cape library, in collaboration with the English Department, proudly hosted an enriching celebration of World Book Day. This event was an homage to Shakespeare's sonnets, bringing together an array of talents from our academic community.

Presentations and Readings

Our program featured a distinguished lineup of presenters, including:

  • Mark Espin: Senior Lecturer, author of "April in Blank Verse"
  • Katlego Chale: Lecturer, theatre maker, actor, and writer
  • Christopher Kudyahakudadirwe: PhD Candidate, novelist in progress
  • Lisa Julie: PhD Candidate, published poet
  • Kirsten Deane: PhD Candidate, debut poetry collection forthcoming
  • Bongeka Mhlauli: PhD Candidate, interest in translation studies
  • Elham Hosseini: PhD Candidate, film theory specialist
  • Nondwe Mpuma: Lecturer and PhD Candidate, author of "Peach Country"

Each presenter brought a unique perspective, offering insightful interpretations and critical analyses of Shakespeare’s enduring works.

Engaging Exhibits

Attendees were treated to thought-provoking exhibits showcasing Shakespeare-related artwork and projects, reflecting the deep engagement of our students and faculty with the Bard’s legacy.

The afternoon culminated in an interactive session, where participants engaged in spirited discussions, sharing their thoughts and interpretations. This lively exchange of ideas was complemented by a convivial tea and coffee reception, fostering a sense of community and shared passion for literature.
